The UK's largest dimensional lab opens its doors

Trescal UK’s refurbished and enlarged Manchester facility has officially opened its doors and is now fully operational, following completion of major works which have delivered a world class calibration and testing capability.

The new facility, which has incorporated part of Trescal’s Leigh capability, is now the largest dimensional laboratory in the UK measuring 13,800 sq ft and employing 55 people. The laboratory is a one-stop-shop to service an extensive range of calibration requirements. This includes the following capability; high voltage, acoustics, accelerometry, mass, torque, dimensional, electrical and pressure.

The project, which was completed on the 31st May, has included the refurbishment of existing laboratory facilities and the creation of specialist standard laboratories which operate under strict climatic conditions to within 0.5oC. In the course of the refurbishment 8.5 miles of data cabling was laid in the building and 3.5 miles of power cabling.

In addition to the creation of six new laboratories, as part of the transition project, the Manchester site has also enjoyed a major investment in new equipment, including a new coordinate measurement machine (CMM), state-of-the-art automated screw gauge calibration equipment.

The Manchester facility primarily services in the North of England, as well as providing dimensional calibration support to the UK Trescal network and is also the central hub for Trescal’s logistics operation in the UK. The key industrial sectors served being aerospace, rail, pharmaceuticals, energy and automotive.

Kevin Hancox, Branch Manager for Manchester, says the refurbished facility is a flagship for Trescal in the UK. “We have taken our calibration capabilities in the North West of England and merged them under one roof to provide customers with seven additional scopes of calibration and a much-improved customer service experience.

“The whole build project has been designed around expansion improved workflow, from goods inward, through to calibration and then the return of equipment to customers. Environmental issues formed a key element of the design with new energy efficient LED lighting, soundproofing and insulation.

Trescal leads way with first for UK ‘calibration of absorbing clamps’ UKAS accreditation

Trescal’s Yateley laboratory has been granted the UKAS accreditation for the calibration of absorbing clamps, the only laboratory in the UK with the ability to provide accreditation to this standard.

The accreditation is for the calibration of absorbing clamps for clamp factor CF, decoupling factor DF and decoupling factor DR, in accordance with the BS EN standard 55016 – 1-3:2006.

Absorbing clamps are used by EMC testing laboratories, for the measurement of radiated emissions from cables and leads. Testing and measurement is required as part of several international specification standards, including EN 55013, EN 55014 and EN  50083-2.

To comply with UKAS accreditation requirements EMC test laboratories must have the test equipment they use calibrated by a suitably accredited laboratory.

Manufacturers are required to have their electrical products tested for any unwanted electromagnetic emissions, and to ensure that equipment is not susceptible to a normal level of interference. Requirements form part of the EMC Directive and failure to comply could result in a fine or potentially imprisonment.

The automated measurement system that Trescal employ utilises a Vector Network Analyser associated with a software controlled DC stepper to move the clamp along the 6 meter test rig. This enables calibration of the Absorbing Clamp at the required 167 frequency points and within the range of 30MHz to 1GHz, as specified by the BS EN standards.

Measurements are also made of the Voltage Reflection Coefficient at the output of the customer’s cable, connecting to their measurement equipment.

Commenting on the additional UKAS accreditation, Stephen Crook, Yateley Branch Manager at Trescal said: “We are delighted that our Yateley laboratory has achieved this accreditation for absorbing clamps. Until now, users of absorbing clamps were required to send equipment abroad to be calibrated in line with the standards, but with this accreditation, we can now meet these needs here in the UK.”

“The achievement demonstrates our commitment to constantly improve the breadth and the quality of the services offered to our customers.”

Trescal acquires GenCal in New Jersey (USA)

Based in Boonton, New Jersey, General Calibration Inc. (GenCal) is an ISO 17025 A2LA accredited one-stop-shop laboratory and employs 22 people for an annual turnover of ~3 M$.

This acquisition allows Trescal to expand its footprint in the American market, strengthening its presence in the North East. It also reinforces its technical skills, particularly in electrical High Voltage calibration. GenCal’s management team will remain unchanged.

Guillaume Caroit, General Secretary of Trescal Group, said: “We are very happy to welcome General Calibration within Trescal group. This acquisition shows our strong commitment to reinforce Trescal presence in the US. We aim at continuing at the same pace our acquisition strategy in North America in 2015.”

This deal was completed with the support of Trescal’s majority shareholder, Ardian, the premium independent private investment company. This acquisition is the tenth build-up following Ardian’s take over of Trescal in July 2013, and the fourth in the United States in 2014.

ABOUT GENERAL CALIBRATION - General Calibration was incorporated in 1988 in Whippany, New Jersey. Since then, the three founders’ goal has been to provide the highest level of service excellence in calibration maintenance and repair of electrical measurement equipment. In 1996 the company moved to Boonton, in a 9 000 sq. foot state-of-the-art laboratory.
